John Julian

I am a clinical therapist, with a post-graduate Social Work degree, with 40 years’ clinical experience.  I have attended several CFT workshops alongside being a certified teacher in Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC).

I provide compassion focused approaches with people in a variety of ways – through one-to-one counselling and group work.

I use Compassion-Focused approaches in one-to-one counselling which are available to you through face-to-face as well as through on-line sessions (a stable internet connection is required).    Compassion focused approaches are usually offered in combination with a gentle CBT approach but can also be provided in a more structured way for individuals by using readily available self-help style books. All counselling and assistance involve a person undertaking homework to experience and practice some level of relaxation and then mindfulness and meditation training, alongside other structured homework which progresses towards developing a more compassion self.

I am Medicare registered and people can be referred with a Mental health Care Plan through their GP and provide EAP (through D’Accord, Occupational Assistance Services).

I also provide training sessions on self-care (using a range of self-compassion techniques and approaches) for organizations which range from 1-hour educational sessions to full on-job-training with an 8 -week program.

I have 12 years full-time, post-qualification experience with two Universities and working privately.  My employment for the last 8 years has been with the University of Cambridge Counselling Service. I also work for the NHS providing clinical supervision to senior nursing staff.

I use a Compassion Focussed approach and draw on my psychodynamic training and experience. I use specific CFT methods if I think this will be helpful. I work short and long term with individuals. I also see couples. For several years, I have run Self-Compassion Workshops to groups of students as part of my work at Cambridge University.

I typically see people once a week. I also offer more or less frequent sessions, depending on what the person would like and what is likely to be most helpful.  I work close to the centre of Cambridge. I provide a calm and containing space to help the person work through any issue they want to bring to therapy.

Francis GHEYSEN

1 Avenue du 6 Juin, 14000 Caen, France

Overview

I could define myself as an eclectic psychiatrist. In my younger years, I had an academic track and worked in the field of Psychiatric Diagnosis, Evaluation, Genetics, Psychopharmacology, Drug development, design and implementation of Good Clinical Practices in Psychiatry. More recently, ten years ago, I met Paul Gilbert by chance in Paris and went to Derby and others places in the UK where I completely relearnt my way of practicing. I discovered CFT and Mindfulness and followed a double curriculum, in Derby for CFT and in London and Scotland for Mindfulness. Since 2010, I have been attending many workshops, seminars and retreats in these two fields. In 2013, with a colleague and friend of mine, Pr Pascal Delamillieure, we created  a charity : Compassionate Mind Foundation France affiliated with Compassionate Mind UK. Since then we have been organising the teaching of CFT and Mindfulness along the lines of what we have learnt in the UK. For CFT :Introductory, Clinical Skills and Advanced Practices. For Mindfulness : a four year curriculum with Mindfulness-first year, Compassion- second year, Insight-third year and Teaching skills-fourth year. I particularly enjoy inviting our English speaking teachers, such Paul Gilbert, Choden, Russel Kolts, Annick Nevejan, Olaf Van Kooten to France for workshops or Retreats  and I hope to invite many others in the future. To my French colleagues I try to transmit the Joy, Energy, Courage, Commitment and Wisdom I have been privileged to witness and experience during my teaching years in the UK.

I’m currently studying for a specialization in sex therapy. I’ve enjoyed deepening my ability to serve the whole of a person’s complex and beautiful self, and include sexuality as a fundamental part of that wholeness. I work with individuals and couples, seeing clients in adolescence and throughout the lifespan with a range of foci including mood and sexual health and more transdiagnostic issues such as self-esteem and interpersonal issues. My therapy approach is an integration I’ve been actively working with and putting together since beginning my graduate school work in 2004. It’s an intentional blend of more modern, third wave therapies with a foundation in Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) as well as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and is heavily influenced by psychodynamic traditions.

My colleagues and I share a passion for third wave and evidence based methods in psychotherapy, a belief in the essential wholeness of all of our clients, and a commitment to the cultivation of the noble qualities of mindfulness and compassion in the daily “full catastrophe” of life (Kabat Zinn, 2013). I love the body and the cultivation of embodiment (RYT200 yogi – I do not teach in studios!) through movement, with mindfulness yoga teacher training from Spirit Rock Meditation Center (Mindfulness Yoga and Meditation Teacher training 2 year program). In my own mindfulness practice I am currently exploring Theravada-based and secular mindfulness practices that help us re-member own good nature and our deeper inter-connections with the natural world.  I recently completed Mark Coleman’s Awake in the Wild Facilitator program which involved two years of wilderness retreats and mindfulness teaching with a fabulous community of other wilderness loving yogis from around the world. Dr Andrew Rayner

Kings Chambers, Derby, UK

I am a Clinical Psychologist who offers both individual and group CFT for adults and I work with most types of psychological problems.

I have specialist skills and experience in using CFT to address the problems of both PTSD and Complex PTSD (which tends to occur where people have suffered multiple traumatic events and /or have had chronic difficulties as a result of experiencing physical, sexual and emotional abuse and neglect in their early lives).

Of course a related area is so-called ‘Borderline Personality Disorder’ and I have many years of working with people with these kinds of difficulties, especially where severe self-harm is also a feature.

I also have unique experience of working to support people within the context of a large-scale historical abuse investigation.

In recent years I have been particularly impressed with the power of ’The Compassionate Self’ to help people with structural dissociation of the personality to become more integrated.  In turn this seems to help them to become more stable and reduces risky behaviour.

I am also an experienced CFT supervisor and would welcome enquiries for supervision.

Dr. Anna Huysse-Gaytandjieva

Boschstraat 45, 6211 AT Maastricht, Nederland

Do you often feel anxious and depressed?

Are you prescribed antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications, but do you somehow instinctively know that something is not being addressed?

In some people, a serious infection or autoimmune disease can be the cause of depression and anxiety.

Today there are nearly 100 recognized autoimmune diseases, and more than 40 disease processes have an autoimmune component. When people get an official autoimmunity diagnosis, the immune system has already destroied a substantial amount of tissue (the brain or the nervous system). In the early stages of autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Sjögren’s syndrome, arteritis, sarcoidosis, scleroderma, Hashimoto thyroiditis, and myasthenia gravis, a misdiagnosis often occurs as a ‘psychiatric disorder’ . Research has shown that depression and anxiety is more common in patients with autoimmune diseases than chronic degenerative diseases. Researchers suspect this is due to the direct action of inflammatory cytokines on the central nervous system.

Dr. Anna Huysse looks at autoimmune diseases as an adaptation issue, in which neural, endocrine, immunological and behavioral processes play a role. The latest scientific insights show that the consciousness and emotions are states of the body, in particular, the immune system.

Dr. Anna Huysse developed a protocol for people with autoimmune diseases, which focuses on the cause instead of fighting the symptoms. Compassion in general and CFT in particular play an important role in this protocol. As an autoimmune patient herself, based on her own experience and working with people with autoimmune diseases in the last 10 years, she is determined to support fellow sufferers. In addition, she is involved in the development of scientific knowledge in this area.
