Esther, Yee Wai Mui

Hong Kong, China

I am a Hong Kong based CFT therapist and a qualified social work and mediator.  Since 2017, I have used Compassion Focused Therapy / Mind Training to help the Chinese community, particularly in Hong Kong.   I write CFT materials in Chinese and accurately translate key words used in CFT into Chinese.  I regularly run CFT groups and individual services to support caregivers and people in distress. I also support individuals and professionals in personal development.   Alongside my CFT work in Hong Kong, I regularly engage with CFT supervisors in the UK and regularly attend training. As an evidence-based practitioner, I am committed to research and development of CFT therapy for the Chinese community and as part of the global CFT community.

I am studying for a PhD at HKU (supervised by Dr Sherry Kit Wa Chan) focused on the development of CFT intervention for caregivers of patients with schizophrenia in Hong Kong.

Since 2011, I have researched CFT including reading Prof. Paul Gilbert’s book. Since 2017, I have received training from Prof. Paul Gilbert and the Compassionate Mind Foundation. I have attended introductory and advanced units and have been involved with workshops; moreover, monthly supervisions from CFT supervisors in the UK have been useful. In addition, I have attended regular CFT based workshops since completing therapist training. In the future, I would like CFT to be an option for people living in the Chinese culture as well as for the non-clinical population, for people in distress and struggling with psychosis, for people with special needs such as intellectual disability and high functioning autism. Recently, I have been working on a research project in Hong Kong involving CFT for caregivers of patients with schizophrenia. This work is supervised by Dr Sherry Kit Wa Chan.
